Mr. Stephenson, Director of Bands

David Stephenson is the Director of Bands and Coordinator of Fine Arts for Alamo Heights ISD. Before coming to Alamo Heights, Mr. Stephenson worked in the Smithson Valley Band program for 12 years where he most recently served as the Director of Bands. He began his teaching career at John H. Wood Middle School in North East ISD.
Mr. Stephenson earned his Bachelor of Music from Texas Tech University in 1998 where he also served as the Drum Major of the Goin' Band from Raiderland. In 2008, Mr. Stephenson received a Master's of Education in Administration from Sam Houston State University.
Mr. Stephenson's wife, Melissa French-Stephenson, is a choir director at Bradley Middle School in North East ISD. They have two boys, James and Sam.

Mr. Chester, Assistant Band Director

Troy Chester graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s of music degree in December 2020, and has been serving as the assistant director of bands at Plains ISD before joining the staff at Alamo Heights. While at Texas Tech, Mr. Chester was an active member of many prestigious ensembles, including the Goin’ Band from Raiderland, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble 1, and Texas Tech’s steel band “Apocalypso Now!”. As a performer, he was a member of many ensembles that performed at conventions and competitions such as the Tournament of Roses Parade in 2015, Performance of Record Series in Carnegie Hall, College Band Directors National Association in Houston, National Conference of Percussion Pedagogy, Midwest Convention in Chicago, and was named runner-up in Texas Tech’s solo concerto competition in 2019. Mr. Chester is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Percussive Arts Society, and Texas Bandmasters Association.
Outside of school, he enjoys spending time with his wife Madison, and their three dogs: Leia, Luna, and Remus.

Mr. Matt Moreno, Assistant Band Director
Matt Moreno is an assistant band director and beginning Euphonium teacher at Alamo Heights High School. Mr. Moreno is a San Antonio native and graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor of Music in Music Studies. While at UTSA, Mr. Moreno participated in the Wind Ensemble, Tuba-Euphonium Choir, Concert Choir, UTSA Indoor Drumline and the Spirit of San Antonio Marching Band. Mr. Moreno is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Mr. Steve McGrew, Band Director

Born and raised in Parma, Ohio, Steve McGrew received his bachelor's degree in music education from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio where he studied saxophone with Greg Banaszak. Upon graduation in 2005, he began teaching middle and elementary school band in Gallipolis, Ohio as the head band director at Gallia Academy Junior High for three years. He then spent one year teaching elementary band in Brunswick, Ohio before accepting the band director position in Alamo Heights in 2009.
At the Junior School, Mr. McGrew directs the Honors Band and teaches the beginner saxophone, clarinet and double reed classes.

Ms. Sydney Robinson, Assistant Band Director

Sydney Robinson is an assistant director at Alamo Heights Junior School. Originally from Austin, TX, she received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University. While at Michigan State, she participated in performing ensembles such as the Spartan Marching Band and the Wind Symphony. Since graduation, she has lived in Paris, TX teaching beginning band and the junior high Concert Band, as well as assisting at the high school.
She is very excited to move to San Antonio and be a part of the Alamo Heights Music program!

Mr. Mike Wilson, Assistant Band Director

Mike Wilson is an assistant director at Alamo Heights Junior School. Entering his 24th year in music education, he enjoys helping and teaching students to find the love and joy of playing a musical instrument and being a part of something bigger than themselves. He grew up playing the trumpet but soon found the passion and skills to perform on all brass instruments and the saxophone.
Mr. Wilson graduated from high school in Marion, TX and received his teaching degree from Texas State University (formerly SWT) in San Marcos, TX. While at SWT, Mr. Wilson performed in the top wind ensemble, the top jazz band, the trumpet ensemble and was drum major for the Bobcat Marching Band for two years.
Mr. Wilson holds membership in Kappa Kappa Psi and their National Intercollegiate Band, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and the Association of Texas Small School Bands previously serving as a region coordinator for five years.
Mr. Wilson and his family are moving “back home” to the San Antonio/New Braunfels area to be close to their family and friends once again. He and his wife Cathie have four children, two grandchildren and another one on the way.
